Sometime during a monotonous period of work, I came up with the idea to backpack across Europe. It's the type of trip you always hear about others taking, whether in books or on film, but the average person always talks themselves out of. I vowed not to be one of those people, and started to plan a trip that cover Christmas, New Years, and my 21st birthday, essentially one big gift to myself.
Seven months of preparation didn't stop me from missing my flight out of the US, though a serendipitous encounter with Orbitz agent presented a second chance, albeit with a delay. Embracing the unexpected, I traded seeing the Swiss Alps and Christmas in the Vatican for a cozy holiday with family, a reminder that sometimes the unplanned detours still work out in the end.
