A quintessential “Boston” movie, one that could only be made by someone from Boston. It’s a little jumpy at the start, but soon settles into a strong performance by Ben Affleck. It’s also a testament to his direction that I now understand what Ridley Scott meant when he said “silence is dynamic.” When high action scenes suddenly cut to silence, the tension amplifies even more. Jeremy Renner’s portrayal of someone who’s both unhinged and absolutely loyal shows a level of skill that’s wasted in his later films.
